The Winnipeg Jets can expect to be without the services of goaltender Ondrej Pavelec for at least the next two games. Jets head coach Paul Maurice made the announcement Saturday following the morning skate and confirmed Al Montoya will start in goal against the Dallas Stars on Sunday. Pavelec suffered a lower-body injury after the first period of their 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers Friday night. Montoya stopped 13 of 15 shots he faced in Pavelecs place and took the loss. The Jets also lost forward Chris Thorburn to a lower-body injury early in the second period after he blocked a shot by Rangers defenceman Kevin Klein. The Jets will call up netminder Michael Hutchinson from the St. Johns IceCaps of the American Hockey League to backup Montoya. The 24-year-old Hutchinson is a third round pick (77th overall) of the Boston Bruins in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Pat Zachry Jersey . NEW YORK, N.Y. - Wearing a navy blue New York Yankees shirt, Jonathan Freedman lined up with other fans outside Gate 2 on Jerome Avenue and East 164th Street. Once he reached the front of the single-file line, he emptied his pockets into a plastic bin and was ushered through a metal detector. Welcome to Yankee Stadium, where security measures now resemble those at the airport. And starting next season, that will be the case at every ballpark in the big leagues. As part of Major League Baseballs security plan, metal detectors were added at some Yankee Stadium gates beginning Tuesday night, when New York hosted the Houston Astros. MLB has been working with the Department of Homeland Security to co-ordinate safety procedures, and all 30 big league parks will have metal detectors by opening day 2015. The Yankees tried to prepare fans for the change, announcing last Friday they would start implementing the new system on this homestand. It will remain in place for the rest of the season. Other stadiums have already put the metal detectors in place, too. "Im currently living abroad in Israel, so Im very proud that they have security here. Its been needed for a long time," the 30-year-old Freedman said. "It took a half a second. It was really fast and thorough and they were very courteous. ... All professional. It was all well done." Fans were asked to take cellphones and large metal objects out of their pockets before walking through the detectors to enter the ballpark. Those who didnt want to pass through the detectors could choose to be checked by security personnel with a hand-held device. "It wasnt that terrible," said Matt Lurin, 48. "I think in the past when we used to have to take our hats off and show nothing was underside, and take our stuff out of the pockets, it was the same thing. Youre less leaving this to chance now. You have a place to put your metal items. They slid it right by and we walked through. It was no problem." But what about when its a sellout crowd for a playoff game? Could delays become aggravating? "I think itll be fine. I used to find it strange when they asked me to take my wallet out, and I really dont feel comfortable taking my wallet out in the middle of the Bronx for no reason," Lurin said. "Now they give me a little thing, I put it right in, and it slides right over. Its on the table and I can see whats going on. It seems fine." About 30 minutes before the first pitch, the line was moving quickly and few fans were grumbling. At least not out loud. "Its frustrating when you see the door 5 feet away and theyre making you wait to go through, but other than that I havent heard any complaints," Lurin said. One security guard, however, mentioned that fans kept forgetting their bags, keys, wallets or phones in the bins as they headed toward the turnstiles after passing through the metal detector. It happened so often that a guard was stationed on the other side of the detector just to remind fans to retrieve their personal belongings. "Youve got to expect the unexpected living in New York," said 36-year-old Tony Rivera, who resides in Chicago. "Id rather be safe than sorry." ___ AP freelance writer Scott Orgera contributed to this report. Tyler Alexander Jersey . WASHINGTON - Left-hander Ross Detwiler was left off the Washington Nationals roster for their NL division series against the San Francisco Giants, while former closer Rafael Soriano made the 25-man cut Friday.San Francisco outfielder Michael Morse, who played for Washington from 2009-12, was not on the Giants roster. He hit .279 with 16 homers and 61 RBIs this season, but hes had only two at-bats since Aug. 31, because of a strained oblique muscle. Is he 100 per cent? No, manager Bruce Bochy said, adding that Morse might be sent to the instructional league to get work in. Taking that into play, along with he hadnt faced pitching in about a month, we just decided to go with (Gary) Brown. He would give us a few more options versus the one pinch hit appearance maybe by Morse.Right-handers Tim Hudson and Ryan Vogelsong, who were not active for the Giants 8-0 wild-card victory at Pittsburgh on Wednesday, returned to the roster. Hudson will start Game 2 on Saturday, while Bochy said Vogelsong or Yusmeiro Petit could start Game 4.The teams had to submit their rosters about five hours before the Nationals hosted the Giants in Game 1. Both went with 12 pitchers and 13 position players. The Giants also included rookie reliever Hunter Strickland, who made his major league debut in September. The 26-year-old righty didnt allow a run in seven innings and was on the Giants roster for the wild-card game.Detwiler is a former starter who spent the regular season in the bullpen, mostly working in long relief. He went 2-3 with a 4.00 ERA in 63 innings across 47 appearances. The last time the Nationals were in the playoffs, in the 2012 NLDS against St. Louis, Detwiler started Game 4 a€” which Washington needed to win to avoid elimination a€” and allowed one unearned run in six innings. It is disappointing for anybody, for sure, especially being here the whole season, manager Matt Williams said, explaining that the Nationals figured they only needed two lefty relievers and went with Matt Thornton and Jerry Blevins.Soriano began this season as the closer and converted 22 of 24 save opportunities with a 0.97 ERA before the All-Star break. Since then, though, he blew five of 15 save chances, and Drew Storen took over the ninth-inning role in September as Washington won the NL East and finished with a league-high 96 wins.He is one of the reasons why we are here. Was the premier closer in the first half of the season, Williams said about Soriano. Went through mechanical issues, and has worked diligently to resolve those. I think he is where he needs to be.Williams indicated that Ryan Zimmerman, who returned in late September from a strained right hamstring, will mostly be used as a pinch hitter but the team will look at the possibility of starting Zimmerman against left-hander Madison Bumgarner in Game 3.Other reserves for Washington include Danny Espinosa, Kevin Frandsen and Nate Schierholtz. Backup outfielder and pinch hitter Scott Hairston, a 34-year-old hoping to be in the playoffs for the first time in his 11-year major league career, did not make the NLDS roster.Washingtons Game 1 lineup was exactly as expected, with centre fielder Denard Span leading off, followed by third baseman Anthony Rendon, right fielder Jayson Werth, first baseman Adam LaRoche, shortstop Ian Desmond, left fielder Bryce Harper, catcher Wilson Ramos, second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera, and right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg, set to make his post-season debut.San Franciscos starting lineup Friday: centre fielder Gregor Blanco, second baseman Joe Panik, catcher Buster Posey, third baseman Pablo Sandoval, right fielder Hunter Pence, first baseman Brandon Belt, shortstop Brandon Crawford, left fielder Travis Ishikawa, and right-hander Jake Peavy.___Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrichAir Force 1 Wholesale .com) - On a night the Bulls played without Derrick Rose, it was time for Pau Gasol to take charge. Mark Buehrle goes after his third win in as many starts on Sunday when the Toronto Blue Jays close out a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. After striking out 11 and coming within an out of a shutout his first time out, Buehrle defeated the Houston Astros on Tuesday, but admittedly wasnt as sharp, despite holding them to a run and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. "I was up in the zone and everything, wasnt getting ahead in the count like I was last start. Im fortunate to get away with one run in 5 1/3 innings. That could have been a game where I gave out eight to 10 runs." Buehrle has faced the Orioles 21 times (19 starts) and is 7-8 with a 3.42 ERA. Baltimore, meanwhile, relies on righty Ubaldo Jimenez, who is still searching for his first win as a member of the Orioles. Jimenez fell to 0-2 on Monday against the New York Yankees, as he allowed four runs and walked five batters in just 4 2/3 innings, while upping his ERA to 6.75 on the year. "He went through some really good sequences and then just got out of whack," Os manager Buck Showalter said of Jimenez. "He was just missing a lot of pitches, but he had the type of stuff that gets you a lot deeper in the game. Hed just go through spurts where he couldnt command it. It was a cold day and he was trying to get a feel for the baseball, but you guys watched it. It wasnt like they banged him around all over the ballpark. He just couldnt get consistent with it. I know hes frustrated because there was a lot longer (of an) outing there potentially today." Jimenez is 2-1 in five starts versus the Blue Jays with a 4.61 ERA. Baltimore won in thrilling fashion on Saturday, as David Loughs RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning propelled the Os to a 2-1 win. Jonathan Schoop knocked in the other run for the Orioles, who shook off a loss in Fridays opener to win for the fourth time in six overall. After J.J. Hardy flied out against Todd Redmond (0-1), Steve Lombardozzi stroked a ball into the gap in right center and raced all the way to third. Lough followed by slicing a pitch to left field to plate the winning run. "It was one of those games where we kept our heads up," Lough said. "I looked in the dugout and we still had energy." The hit made a winner of Zach Britton (2-0), who tossed two scoreless relief frames. Colby Rasmus two-out, homer in the ninth stood as the lone production for the Blue Jays, who have lost two of three. Baltimore won last years season series with the Blue Jays by a slim 10-9 margin. ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Ndamukong Suh was back with his teammates at practice, and he was almost done talking to reporters when he made an odd reference to the beginning of his career with the Detroit Lions. Suh says he could have played elsewhere when he entered the league. The Lions took him with the second overall pick in the 2010 draft. "Probably a lot of you guys dont know, I could have gone elsewhere when I was drafted. I had that decision in my hands," Suh said. "I chose not to take it, because thats just the way I saw it." Suh was responding to a question about whether he wants to stay with Detroit long term -- his point was that his decision to play for the Lions in the first place was evidence of his commitment. But he did not elaborate much when asked how, exactly, he might have ended up elsewhere four years ago. "Theres many ways to do things," Suh said. "You can drop down in the draft, you can move up in the draft. People can come get you. Theres a lot of things that happen that you guys dont know. ... It is for sure my choice, but like I said, thats water under the bridge, Im here in Detroit. Im happy to be here in Detroit, and Im going to continue to play my heart out, as Ive always done." Suh is entering the last season of his contract, so his future with the Lions is unclear. He skipped the teams voluntary minicamp last month, but hes stayed away from voluntary workouts before in his career. He is taking part in organized team activities now, and was at practice Wednesday. The two-time All-Pro has always gotten himself physically ready to play. "This is the same time I came last year," Suh said. "Ive been in a great program, one thats dialed in exactly to me and whats best for my body, to have longevity, which has been proven. I havent missed many games, if any at all. So thats what I do. I stayed close to that program." Suh said his absence had nothing to do with contract talks. "If it was about my contract, I wouldnt be here now," he said. Suh says hes not putting a timetable on his contract negotiations. Suh said he was probably one of the first players on the team to meet with members of Detroits new coaching staff. The Lions fired Jim Schwartz and replaced him with Jim Caldwell after last season. And Suh isnt buying the idea that his absence during the off-season affects his ability to be a leader. Suh became a captain last season. "Last year I came in at the same exact time," Suh said. "I showed that I was worthy of wearing a C at that point in time." As for Caldwell, he seemed happy to move on from the constant questions about whether Suh would be participating in the teams off-season work. "He looks good, obviously. Hes in very fine shape, as always," Caldwell said. "Hes one of those guys -- he knows how to take care of his body. Hes certainly done a great job with that, and hes fit and excited about being here." Indeed, Suh looked ready to practice Wednesday, at one point knocking two blockers back almost into the quarterback during a drill. "Hes back and hes in full swing, and doing everything above and beyond," centre Dominic Raiola said. "I dont know if you guys watched practice close, but you can see him doing extra steps, taking extra conditioning measures, finishing down the field 40 yards. We see all that. If I see all that, I know everybody else sees all that." NOTES: Caldwell said WR Golden Tate was absent because he was with the Seattle Seahawks for their presidential visit. Stiviano he is bothered by he association with African-Americans and asks her not to bring them to Clippers games. On April 29, the NBA banned Sterling for life and fined him $2.5 million. Commissioner Adam Silver also said that he will urge fellow owners to force Sterling to sell the team. The report states that Blecher is arguing that Sterling has not violated any article of the NBA constitution, and that Sterlings "due process rights" have been violated by the league. This time, shes going to be more prepared. And this time, shes hoping it lasts a little longer. "It feels good to be back at No. 1," said Lewis, who is in Waterloo, Ont., at the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic looking for her third win of the season. "I only got four weeks there last year so Im looking forward to hopefully spending a little bit more time there." Lewis took over the No. 1 spot on the world rankings last week when she won her second tournament of the year, the Shoprite LPGA Classic, surpassing Inbee Park. It marked the second time the native of Toledo, Ohio found herself on the top of womens golf, but last time it came as more of a surprise. Not this time around. "Obviously I knew all the scenarios," she said. "I knew what would happen." Getting another win this week wouldnt be out of the question. Lewis, who is sponsored by Manulife, has finished tied for sixth in each of the past two years at Grey Silo. The tournament has proved to be a birdie-fest in its short life – last years winning score was 26-under -- and Lewis just happens to have made 209 of those this year, more than any other player on tour. Of course beyond the wins and the losses and the birdies and bogeys, her story is an inspirational one. She wasnt a great junior player, wasnt the top golfer on her high school team and wasnt heavily recruited by colleges, ending up playing for the University of Arkansas. Oh and there was the scoliosis. For seven and a half years, she wore a back brace for 18 hours a day, hoping to correct the curvature in her spine. After that, she underwent surgery to put in a stainless steel rod and five screws to hold her spinne in place.dddddddddddd Golf? She was told she might not even walk again. (Click here to visit Lewis web site and see X-rays of her back pre and post operation) Not a week goes by on tour when she doesnt receive a thank you for being a shining example, or hear a story from someone else in a similar position to her. She encourages them, supports them and even keeps in touch with a number, some of whom arent even golfers. So being atop the world ranking is something special for the ever-smiling, cheery Razorback. "I want to be in this position, I want to be No. 1 in the world and I want to raise the bar," she said. "I want to show people how good we are out here. By me playing good golf, it forces everyone else to play some good golf too." Good golf is something Lewis has been doing for some time now. In the last year and a half, shes won five times and posted 29 top-10 finishes. In the last three and a half years, shes banked more than $6 million. This year? Two victories and 10 top-10s in 12 starts. Despite that, shes pretty low key. The only reward shes splurged on since she joined the LPGA Tour was a new car she bought with the first cheque she made back in 2008 – its a car she still drives. But sitting atop the golf world this time around will be different; shes going to drink it all in and enjoy it, for as long at it lasts. "You know, I think this time Im going to try to embrace it," Lewis said. "I dont want to say theres pressure – I put enough pressure on myself already so I dont need to worry about the rankings. If I stay there for four or 20 or 50 weeks, whatever it is, any time you spend at No. 1 in the world its going to be great." The way shes playing, you can probably expect to see Lewis on top for some time to come. ' ' '
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Derek Jeter gave the Los Angeles Angels fans something special to remember him by in his final game at the "Big A." And he received something equally special in return. Jeter ended a home run drought of 161 at-bats in his final regular-season game against the Angels, and the New York Yankees kept Hector Santiago winless in seven starts with a 9-2 victory on Wednesday night. Vidal Nuno (1-0) allowed a run and four hits in 6 13 innings, struck out three and retired 14 of his last 15 batters. The left-handers only other victory in seven big league starts was May 13 of last season, when he pitched five scoreless innings of three-hit ball at Cleveland in a 7-0 decision. Unless both clubs meet in the playoffs, this was Jeters swan song against the Halos, who dropped two of three in the Bronx 1 1-2 weeks ago. Jered Weaver, Albert Pujols, Mike Trout and Howie Kendrick carried a 12-foot-long pinstriped paddleboard with Jeters No. 2 and the Yankee logo to the middle of the diamond and presented it to him following a milestone-studded video tribute as the sellout crowd of 44,083 roared its approval. "That was a cool gift. I thought that was awesome. I can use that in my backyard," Jeter said with a grin. "But I dont expect something everywhere I go. I mean, this was a surprise to me. The fans have been awesome here from the first game of the series. Its something that youll remember, and I appreciate it. Ive played a lot of games here in the regular season and post-season, so I have fond memories of playing in Anaheim." It was the second time in two years that the Angels management went out of the way to honour a member of former manager Joe Torres "Core Four." Last season it was Mariano Rivera, who retired as the all-time saves leader and received a painting of himself. "Mos different from me," Jeter said. "I play every day, so I have to go out there and play (after the pregame ceremony). Mo got massaged for five innings and went out on to the bullpen in the seventh, so its completely different." Jeter made it 6-0 in the second with a two-out drive to left-centre for his 257th career homer and first since July 28, 2013, against Tampa Bays Matt Moore at New York. In Mondays series opener, the Yankees captain doubled to end a drought of 55 at-bats without an extra-base hit. "Its good to get one," Jeter said. "Im not catching Babe Ruth or anything, but at least youd like to get one. The important thing is that we got a win. It was a good game for us in a lot of different ways." Eleven of Jeters last 12 home runs have been solo shots, including one against Santiago when he pitched for the White Sox in August 2012. "When he came up to the plate the first time, I kind of gave him a little head nod, like Hey, we appreciate what youre doing here. But then you just battle, man," Santiago said. "I felt like I made a good pitch to him his next time up. Hes gotten me in the past on off-speed stuff, so I just went away from that. It was one of the better cutters Ive thrown my last seven starts, and he got me." Jeter got a standing ovation before his final at-bat during the Yankees three-run eighth. He hit a fielders choice comebacker to reliever Cory Rasmus for a force at the plate after a two-run single by John Ryan Murphy, and Carlos Beltran added a sacrifice fly. Santiago (0-6) was charged with six runs, five hits and three walks in 2 1-3 innings. Four of the runs were unearned, the result of errors by Santiago and right fielder Cowgill. NOTES: One day after the publication of Riveras book, "The Closer: My Story," Yankees manager Joe Girardi sidestepped questions about the combustible content — which included Riveras opinion that Bostons Dustin Pedroia was a better second baseman than ex-teammate Robinson Cano. "Those are Marianos comments, and its probably why I chose not to write books," Girardi said. "I had plenty of opportunities with some of my experiences, but right now I just dont think it would be a good idea." ... Jeters first game in Anaheim was May 27, 1996, when he batted ninth and went 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly and two walks in Andy Pettittes 16-5 win over future Yankee Jim Abbott. TORONTO -- Tim Leiweke, the man who brought Jermain Defoe to Toronto FC, appears ready to show the England striker the door. Defoes future has been in doubt since Toronto manager Ryan Nelsen was fired Aug. 31 and the MLS team revealed it had turned down a club record bid for the 31-year-old forward. There has been rampant speculation that Defoe, currently nursing a groin injury back in England, wants to return to his homeland. "I personally dont think Defoe will come back. I think if he doesnt want to be here, you get rid of him," Leiweke, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, told Ryerson students at the Ted Rogers School of Management on Thursday. "My attitude if you want to be here and you want to buy into what were doing, lets go," he added. "Roll up your sleeves and well fight together. And I will be there with you every day. "If you dont want to be here, get the hell out of our way." Leiweke made his comment about Defoe not coming back after saying he expected some new designated players next year. The clubs three DPs this season are Defoe, American midfielder Michael Bradley and Brazilian forward Gilberto. Leiwekes TFC comments, in a question-and-answer session with the students, soon found their way to English media outlets, featured on both the Daily Mirror and BBC websites. The club had previously said that Defoe is expected back next week to continue his rehab and that he wants to be here. The former Spurs man is TFCs leading scorer with 11 goals. Toronto FC sits seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 9-11-6 record. And while saying the team was making progress, he took a swipe at the rest of the roster while saying the fans, media and club itself were stuck in a losing tradition. "The only two guys in our locker-room that are looking around and going we aint going down unless we go down fighting are Michael Bradley and (new manager) Greg Vanney. We have work to do there. Were not done by any means." "I pray that we make it to the playoffs this year," he added, "because you all deserve it. But I think we still have some hard decisions and hard work to do." Leiweke also said he made a mistake by retaining manager Ryan Nelsen and his coaching staff for the start of the season, saying he had done it out of loyalty to Nelsen. "Of the seven coaches we let go, not one of them had his coaching license," said Leiweke. The MLSE boss noted that Vanney had his coaching license and taught other coaches. In fact, former assistant coach Fran OLeary had just finished the two-year UEFA Pro Licence course, needing only to make a final presentation, when he joined Nelsen at his introductory news conference. And a club spokesman said goalie coach Stewart Kerr also had a coaching licence. Leiweke has announced he is leaving MLSE by June 2015 or sooner. But he continues to make headlines. Just ask the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Saturday night, starter Nick Hernandez retired the first 15 batters he faced, while Josh Mazzola and Ray Sadler homered, as the Goldeyes held on to beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 5-4 at Shaw Park. It didnt look like a thriller through the first five innings as Hernandez had complete control of the RedHawks, but Fargo never quits and the Goldeyes had to dig deep to record their third straight win. "My fastball was down in the zone and I only threw one change up through the first five innings," said Hernandez, who had a perfect game going into the sixth. "It was my defense that made the difference. I pitched to contact – there werent many strikeouts tonight – and I got great support behind me. Ray (Sadler) made a great catch at the wall and Donnie Webb made a good catch in right and that was the reason why I was able to do what I did tonight." With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 26-14 on the season and pulled four games ahead of Fargo in the race for first in the American Associations North Division. It was Winnipegs third straight win and the teams second straight victory over Fargo to open this four-game series at Shaw Park. With a big wind blowing out over the left-field wall, the Goldeyes, pounded out 14 hits, but left 12 men on base. Winnipeg scored early in the ballgame and built a 4-0 lead and then had to hold on as the wind took routine fly balls and carried them over the wall.dddddddddddd This Fish scored a run in the second when Josh Mazzola singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Reggie Abercrombie. Winnipeg added three in the third when Ryan Pineda doubled and came home on a single by Tyler Kuhn. Kuhn was the first across the plate when the next batter, Mazzola, stepped up and hit a two-run line shot over the left-field wall. After Fargo scored a run in the sixth, and then made it 4-3 on a two-run opposite-field homer by Nic Jackson in the seventh, the Goldeyes Ray Sadler led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot. That turned out to be winning run because Jackson hit his second opposite-field homer of the game, a solo shot off reliever Chris Kissock, in the ninth. Mazzola had four hits for Winnipeg while Kuhn had three and Pineda, Sadler and Haerther had two each. Hernandez (4-0, 3.56 ERA) picked up the win for Winnipeg, while Stanton (1-5, 4.14 ERA) took the loss. Chris Kissock got his team-leading eighth save of the year for Winnipeg. The Goldeyes and RedHawks will play Game 3 of this four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at Shaw Park. Matt Jackson (5-2, 2.96 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Jake Laber (6-1, 3.40 ERA) will take to the mound for Fargo. ' ' '
CFL training camps opened Sunday amid the uncertainty of a potential players strike. Veterans reported for the start of two-a-day workouts three days after negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement broke down for the second time in as many weeks. The old deal expired at midnight ET on Thursday, the two sides havent met since and have no new talks scheduled. The CFL Players Association has mailed strike ballots to its members but Alberta labour laws could push the start of a strike into next week. For defensive back Eric Fraser, a union rep for the expansion Ottawa Redblacks, thats a good thing. "Thats a lot of time for the (CFLPA) executive and CFL to sit back down and hammer something out," he said. "I dont think were too far away right now, but tough decisions are going to have to be made on our end and their end and hopefully we can nail something out and everyone leaves the negotiating table a little upset because they think they gave up a little too much." There has been one strike since the formation of the CFLPA in 1965. That was in 74 when a new agreement was reached during training camp without the loss of regular-season games. The 2014 regular season is scheduled to kick off June 26. Despite the huge cloud hanging over the league, Fraser is confident a deal will be reached. "I have 100 per cent confidence there would be no lockout or strike like (2012 in the NHL) in the CFL," he said. "You just cant do it. "A good deal is going to get done here and I think thats positive." The CFL and players met for 17 hours over two days last week but money remains a major stumbling block after the league signed a five-year TV deal with TSN said to be worth a whopping $42 million annually this off-season. That deal alone would reportedly net teams an extra $2.7 million in 2014. The CFLPA is looking for the salary cap -- which was $4.4 million last year -- to increase to $5.8 million, with a $4.8 million minimum. The league has countered with a $5-million cap offer and boosting the average stipend to $96,000 from $92,917. The players have amended their revenue-sharing stance. Instead of requesting specific percentages on gate, television and sponsorship revenues, the CFLPA proposed a fixed cap for at least two years. After the second if league revenues increased by more than $12 million -- excluding the Grey Cup -- the two sides would renegotiate the cap or the CBA would be terminated at seasons end. The league would renegotiate the cap if revenues increased by $27 million or more in the third year. Cohon, who called the CFLs proposal last week its last and best, has repeatedly stated owners wont agree to any revenue-sharing offer because league revenues and profits arent enough for the model to work effectively. And that bothers veteran kicker Paul McCallum, the B.C. Lions player rep. "I dont know which way is up when (Cohon) talks sometimes," McCallum said. "All I know is the finances are what they are -- theyre black and white. "As players we just need to be treated fairly, and thats all were asking for. Were not millionaires here." For decades the CFL suffered financially, something the 44-year-old McCallum knows firsthand. But the veteran kicker feels the CFL is banking on the union cracking this time around. "To be quite honest, over my career weve sort of bent and bent and bent so I guess they think why would we not bend now," he said. "Theyre in for a rude awakening this time. "Enough is enough." Argos centre Jeff Keeping, also a member of the CFLPA executive, is glad to be playing football again but would readily replace his uniform with a suit for the resumption of contract talks. "The players are unwavering . . . we hope to get back to the negotiating table," he said. "Until then were here to play football." Veteran Ottawa quarterback Henry Burris is undeterred about the leagues labour strife but said its time the two sides resume talking. "The people that are in place saying all this stuff in the media, they need to quit all that crap and get to work and do what theyre paid to do and thats to make decisions and get this thing rectified so we can get back out here and do our jobs," he said. "For me thats the bottom line, as a senior member of the CFL, Im telling you guys Lets get this thing done, so we can get out here on the field and do our jobs because were looking forward to an amazing time here in Ottawa and we dont want nobody to spoil this party that we have planned." Toronto head coach Scott Milanovich has contingency plans for a work stoppage but says right now its business as usual. "Any practices we can get is great for the coaches, great for the players," he said. "It just makes the practices we get in even more important that we take advantage to all the minutes and reps we get." Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and B.C. running back Andrew Harris are both pretty much taking the same approach. "Its not in my mind, its not in my control," Levi Mitchell said. "No matter what, whatever happens, the day you come back, if it does happen, youve got to be ready to play that day. Were going to come out here and compete and get better every single day and practise like nothings going on." Added Harris: "Were here to work. were here to get better. Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers announced on Tuesday that first baseman Mitch Moreland underwent surgery on his ailing left ankle. Moreland had been placed on the 15-day disabled list with Os Trigonum Syndrome in that ankle back on June 10. He ended up having a reconstructive procedure on a ligament along with bone realignment, all of which is expected to sideline him for three months. The club revealed Moreland is currently recovering in his native Mississippi. The 28-year-old Moreland batted just .246 with two home runs and 23 RBI over 52 games this season. As a result, Texas purchased the contract of first baseman Carlos Pena from Triple-A Round Rock and designated infielder Brad Snyder for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Pena, 36, has eight hits in 24 at-bats (one HR, two RBI) over seven games with Round Rock thus far. The native of the Dominican Republic batted .207 with eight homers and 25 RBI in 89 games between the Astros and Royals in 2013. Per the clubs executive vice president of communications, Pena will play first base and bat sixth against the Tigers later Tuesday. This was his little routine and it was working effectively for him. Of course, so were his almost unhittable cutter and four-seam fastball. Cueto threw eight stellar innings to become the first 15-game winner in the majors and Kris Negron had a career-high four hits, including a tiebreaking single in the ninth, as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Friday night. Cincinnatis ace came through in a big way. Cueto (15-6) allowed two runs and six hits to help the Reds snap a three-game skid. He is 7-0 since a loss at San Diego on July 2. "As a manager, its very comfortable being able to put your stock into one guy," Reds skipper Bryan Price said. "You go all in with Johnny and you dont fear losing the game late." Nolan Arenado was about the only Rockies hitter who was making good contact against Cueto. Arenado homered and had two deep flyouts. After watching Billy Hamilton catch his drive to centre in the eighth, Arenado passed by Cueto and grinned at something the pitcher said. "He was saying, You just missed that," Arenado recounted. "Hes one of the best in the league. Hes an animal. As the situation and innings got tighter, he got better." Negron lined a two-out single up the middle off Adam Ottavino (0-4) to bring in Ramon Santiago with the go-ahead run. Aroldis Chapman closed for his 26th save in 28 chances. Charlie Culberson drew a one-out walk and pinch-hitter Mike McKenry sent a shot down the line that first baseman Brayan Pena -- who started the game at catcher -- snared as he toppled over. Pena then touched first base with his glove to double up Culberson. Cueto worked his way out of a jam in the sixth after giving up a tying RBI double to Corey Dickerson. With one out and the bases loaded, Cueeto struck out Culberson with a 95 mph fastball and then fanned D.ddddddddddddJ. LeMahieu with the same pitch. The hard-throwing righty splintered quite a few bats with his heavy pitches running in on the hands of hitters. "His cutter is just filthy," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Theres a reason why hes been as successful as he has been." The Rockies turned reliever Matt Belisle into an emergency starter when Franklin Morales was a late scratch after his wife went into labour. Belisle and five other relievers kept the game close until the ninth. Belisle allowed one run and tossed a season-high 49 pitches in three innings. It was his first start since May 25, 2008, with the Reds. "When you sign the contract, it doesnt tell you when youre going to pitch," Belisle said. "I looked at it as a great opportunity." FAMILY AFFAIR Negron picked quite a game to have his parents and grandmother fly in from California. He jokingly said hes going to have them take him to the same restaurant and then sit in the same seats Saturday. TRAINERS ROOM Reds: 3B Todd Frazier was out of the starting lineup with a balky back, which he hurt the night after hitting a ball off the end of his bat. "Pain shot up the right side of my back," Frazier said. He said he thinks its a muscle strain in his lower back. Hes day to day. Rockies: Weiss said it "sounds like things went well" with SS Troy Tulowitzkis hip surgery Friday in Vail. OF Carlos Gonzalez will have surgery on his left knee Monday. UP NEXT Reds: RHP Dylan Axelrod is expected to be brought up from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday to fill in for injured Homer Bailey, whos headed to the disabled list with a strained right elbow. It will be Axelrods first major league start since last September. Rockies: RHP Jordan Lyles (6-1, 3.70 ERA) will make his third start since returning from the DL. Madrid, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Madrid is will be shorthanded when the club welcomes Real Sociedad to the Bernabeu on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo will begin his two-match ban for committing acts of violent conduct in Real Madrids 2-1 defeat of Cordoba last time out. The reigning Ballon dOr winner has been in fine form in recent weeks, but Real Madrids star-studded squad makes the team an instant favorite regardless of the opposition. Gareth Bale, who nabbed the winning goal in Madrids win over Cordoba, will be asked to shoulder the bulk of the offensive responsibilities. Karim Benzema, meanwhile, will be aiming to find the back of the net for just the second time in the clubs last six outings across all competitions. Real Sociedad will be tasked with slowing down La Ligas top side, but the club also needs to focus on its own form. La Real has been quite inconsistent in recent few months, producing a 4-5-5 record over its last 14 league contests. One victory from that run did come against Barcelona, though, so David Moyes will hope to lead his team to another major scalp on Saturday. Barcelona has gone on a three-game winning run since falling to Sociedad at the Anoeta, as well as dispatching of Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey. The Catalans will return to La Liga action on Sunday with a home clash against a Villarreal side that enters the weekend on a 10-game unbeaten streak. Andy Dalton has done something special during his just-getting-started career. Now he gets another chance to win one when it matters most. Dalton threw four touchdown passes on Sunday, and linebacker Vincent Rey returned an interception 25 yards for a score and the Bengals had another big day at home, beating the Minnesota Vikings 42-14 on Sunday. A few minutes after their game ended, the Bengals (10-5) clinched a playoff berth when Miami lost at Buffalo 19-0. They later clinched the AFC North title when Baltimore lost at home to New England 41-7. Its Cincinnatis first division title since 2009 and the Bengals eighth overall in their 46 seasons. And it makes it 3 for 3 for Dalton, who will be in the spotlight more than anyone else at playoff time. Its the first time in their history that the Bengals have reached the playoffs in three straight seasons. "To be in the playoffs every year since Ive been here is huge," said Dalton, only the fifth quarterback in NFL history to make the playoffs in each of his first three seasons. "It gives you a chance to accomplish the ultimate goal." Something about Paul Brown Stadium brings out the best in Dalton and the Bengals, who are 7-0 at home. Theyve topped 40 points in each of their past four home games, a franchise first. Dalton has thrown for five, three, three and four TDs in those games. "He was really grooving out there today," said A.J. Green, who caught two of the touchdowns. "We got everybody involved today." The Vikings (4-10-1) had knocked off playoff contenders Chicago and Philadelphia in the past three weeks. Even with Adrian Peterson back from a foot injury, they couldnt keep up. The Vikings had allowed the second-most points in the league heading into the game. They gave up 40 for the third time this season. Two of Cincinnatis touchdowns came off their defence. "Turnovers definitely decided the game," said Peterson, who sat out the second half with the Vikings far behind. "We put them in a position to play the game the way they wanted to play. "Its tough getting behind the 8-ball like we did." Dalton has thrown 31 touchdown passes this season, one shy of Carson Palmers club record from 2005.dddddddddddd Dalton replaced Palmer in the 2011 season and has led the Bengals surge. His biggest shortcoming: 0-2 with two poor showings in the playoffs. The Bengals havent won a playoff game since the 1990 season, tied for the seventh-longest stretch of futility in NFL history. Dalton had good conditions for throwing the ball — breezy with temperatures in the 50s. And the defence helped out, too. Dalton threw touchdown passes of 29 yards to Green and 16 yards to Jermaine Gresham as the Bengals pulled ahead 28-7 before halftime, the most points that Minnesota had allowed in an opening half. Two of Cincinnatis first three touchdowns came courtesy of the defence. Reys interception and touchdown return made it 21-7. Giovani Bernard pulled off the games flashiest play, turning a short pass into a 41-yard play in the third quarter by doing a complete spin to avoid a tackler, stiff-arming another and reaching the 7-yard line. Dalton passed to Mohamed Sanu for his third touchdown. Green made a one-hand grab of a 2-yard pass for another TD. Peterson returned after missing a game with a sprained right foot. He got the ball on Minnesotas first two plays and gained only 4 yards. On third down, Cassel was sacked on a blitz and fumbled. End Carlos Dunlap picked up the ball and returned it to the 4-yard line. Two plays and 12 seconds later, BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran it in for a 7-0 lead. Peterson was limited to 45 yards on 11 carries. Cassel was 13 of 27 for 114 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. The Vikings took advantage of Dre Kirkpatrick for their first touchdown — the cornerback played off Jarius Wright, went for a fake and stumbled, allowing the receiver to run past him for a 36-yard score. Notes: Pat Haden of the Rams, Dan Marino of the Dolphins, Bernie Kosar of the Browns and Joe Flacco of the Ravens are the other four QBs to lead their teams to the playoffs in each of their first three seasons. ... The Vikings were 0 for 9 on third down and 0 for 2 on fourth down. ... Minnesota managed only 209 total yards, its second-lowest total of the season. ... Bengals TE Tyler Eifert sat out the second half with a pinched nerve in his neck. ' ' '
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos coach John Fox returned to work Monday, four weeks after open-heart surgery, his newfound energy matching his renowned enthusiasm. "I feel tremendous. As my surgeon said, I had a valve that was the size of a pinhead and now its the size of a 50-cent piece," Fox said. "Obviously, the doctors feel good about me getting back to work. I actually would have preferred to be back sooner, but there was a pretty hard deadline of four weeks post-surgery and I honoured that and here I am." Truth is, Fox has been telecommuting for weeks. As soon as he was released from the hospital after having his aortic valve repaired, a surgery he had hoped to put off until after the Super Bowl, Fox set up a sort of command centre at his off-season home in Charlotte, N.C., some 200 yards from the spot on the golf course where he fell ill on Nov. 2 during the Broncos bye. Not only was he in daily contact with defensive co-ordinator Jack Del Rio, who guided the Broncos (10-2) to three wins in four games during in his absence, but Fox was also in constant communication with his captains, including quarterback Peyton Manning, over the toughest stretch of Denvers season. Fox was able to keep track of his team on his big-screen TV on game days and on his iPad play book, watching cut-ups of practices and helping to formulate game plans. "Other than that I was in another state, (it was) much the same as what I would have done in my office at Dove Valley," Fox said. "I want to be careful how I say that. I was involved, just like everybody in this building is involved. Like I said, its not one guy. Its a team. And its a lot of people doing their job. As I mentioned before, its a tribute to the staff and the players that did a tremendous job as I went on the longest bye week in history." Del Rio maintained his defensive play-calling duties while he was interim head coach and he allowed offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase to continue calling plays for Manning & Co. Fox admitted there were times he cringed at the play-calling while watching the games on TV. "In fairness, a couple times," he said, chuckling. "But Im sure a lot of people do the same thing when Im doing that. Its just part of the game." Fox and his wife, Robin, flew home on team owner Pat Bowlens jet on Wednesday and at Del Rios suggestion he visited with the team on Thanksgiving morning, then watched from his home in Denver as the Broncos beat the Chiefs 35-28 Sunday at Kansas City to take charge of the AFC West. Executive Vice-President John Elway presented Del Rio with a game ball afterward. "It was special to have John Elway recognize the things I did," Del Rio said, "but I basically want to say that is just a representation of what we all did. It wasnt about me; it was a collective effort of all the players, coaches, trainers, equipment guys that had to pull together in Coach Foxs absence." On Monday, Fox drove into work and was greeted by hugs and handshakes. Players said he flashed that famous smile all day long. "I had open-heart surgery and watching those games was harder than any pain I felt during that rehab," Fox said. "He stood up there in front of us in the team meeting and told us he feels better than ever," tight end Joel Dreessen said. Fox said he lost 10 pounds, and "Im actually in better shape now than I was a month ago." He said he has no restrictions, but isnt going to push it, either. "Yeah. Im going to be smart," he said. "If all of a sudden I cant hold my eyes open, Im going to go home. Like I said, the last three weeks, Ive been operating pretty much like I did the first eight games of the season. Its not like Im moving furniture or doing roofs. I sit somewhere and watch football." Hes not sure yet whether hell coach from the booth or the sideline Sunday when the Broncos host Tennessee (5-7). "Im going to see how I feel. I havent been to a practice yet. But it wont make a big difference. Im in communication with everybody whether theyre in the press box or on the field," Fox said. I am looking forward to working with him.In a competition renowned for lower-league sides emerging victorious, Blyth looked set to overcome a five-tier difference and cause the upset of the day against Birmingham when captain Robbie Dale scored twice in six first-hallf minutes.ddddddddddddMore than 3,600 were packed into Blyths park, and they gave their team a standing ovation at halftime, with the prospect of making the fourth round for only the second time in their 116-year history. Then Birmingham exceeded Blyths quick double-strike with three goals in six minutes in the second half to win the tie. Were disappointed, but if someone had said before the game we were going to lose 3-2 and have a chance in the final minute we might have taken it, Blyth manager Tom Wade said.Dale, a barman in a side which also featured a taxi driver and plumber, wasnt looking forward to working on Sunday.I am due to open up at half past 11 on Sunday morning, Dale said. I asked the gaffer (manager) if I could do a shorter shift because I didnt know what mood I will be in today. (But) after a couple of goals I am planning to have a good night.Elsewhere, Swansea avoided embarrassment by routing fourth-tier Tranmere 6-2, with Bafetimbi Gomis spearheading its attack with two goals.Leicester beat fellow Premier League side Newcastle 1-0. A first-half header from forward Leonardo Ulloa was the difference. ' ' '
Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Holden scored the go-ahead goal at 11:03 of the third period, and the Colorado Avalanche went on to post a 4-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. Holden fired a point shot that deflected in off the stick of Panthers forward Scottie Upshall with one second left on a power play. Jarome Iginla added an empty-netter with 27 seconds remaining. The goal was the 573rd of Iginlas career, moving him into a tie with Mike Bossy for 20th all-time in NHL history. Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves for the Avalanche, who picked up their first win on a five-game road trip that began with one-goal losses to Washington and Carolina. It was an important one for our confidence. I thought our guys did a good job, said Colorado coach Patrick Roy. We were okay in the first, but I thought we played better in the second and third. Roberto Luongo stopped 25-of-28 shots for Florida, which opened a five-game homestand following a 4-2-0 road trip. I thought we worked hard, and we played good. I thought we were as good a team as they were, if not a little bit better, said Panthers coach Gerard Gallant. Disappointed to see that power-play goal happen late in the game. There was a lot of pressure by the Panthers to begin the game, but a breakdown in their own zone resulted in a goal for the Avalanche. Defenseman Tyson Barrie skated in freely from the right point with the puck and ripped a shot past Luongo at the 2:11 mark of the first period. Rookie defenseman Aaron Ekblad tied it three minutes later at the end of a 5- on-3 power play. The No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft snapped a shot from the high slot through traffic and behind Varlamov at 5:15. Floridas power play had been struggling of late, going 0-for-13 in the past five games. The Avalanche grabbed a 2-1 lead when Gabriel Landeskog made a strong move out from behind the net with the puck and slipped it under Luongos right pad at 13:02 of the second period. Colorados second lead lasted only 23 seconds. Aleksander Barkov went to the front of the net and tapped in Brad Boyes feed from the right wing for the tying goal. Game Notes Luongo played in his 837th career game, tying Jacques Plante for 11th all-time among NHL goaltenders ... Colorado rookie forward Borna Rendulic left the game with a foot injury and didnt return. Lee Smith Jersey . Golden States second straight road win wasnt painless. DETROIT -- Helio Castroneves celebrated in his signature style, climbing a fence, in the same place where he did it for the first time many years ago. Castroneves crew joined him above the track in front of roaring fans and it was fitting because his behind-the-scenes teammates helped him have his way with the competition. "I did not expect that," he said after easily winning the second Detroit Grand Prix race of the weekend Sunday, finishing 1.6836 seconds ahead of Penske Racing teammate Will Power. "They deserved it. "That was great to see them there." It was here in Detroit where Castroneves raced to the first of his 29 victories in 2000 and scaled the safety fence. And, the 39-year-old Brazilian is still winning and climbing with more composure. "I was able to hold my emotions better," he said. "I guess Im getting older." Team owner and unofficial race promoter Roger Penske was not a part of the fence-climbing celebration, but he had to be one of the happiest guys on Belle Isle because Castroneves and Power finished first and second. "You dream about these weekends," Penske said. "To be as strong as we were and see both guys in the winners circle." Castroneves lead was so large that when he made his final pit stop on Lap 49 he still was ahead when he got back on the track. The competition got closer after cautions led to restarts with seven and three laps left, but Castroneves could not be caught in part because Power did not want to risk ruining his teammates path to victory by possibly hitting him. "Because of Roger, I definitely wasnt going to race him hard," Power said. Castroneves has 29 IndyCar victories, tying Rick Mears for 11th on the career. "Oh, really?" Castroneves asked. "Wow. What an honour." Castronneves finished 0.dddddddddddd060 seconds behind Ryan Hunter-Reay last week in the Indianapolis 500 in his bid to join Mears as a four-time winner in open-wheel racings signature event. Power won Saturday and played a big part in a sloppy start Sunday. He was penalized for avoidable contact on the opening lap, failing to turn right and causing Josef Newgarden to hit him from behind to trigger a three-car crash. That led to the first of two cautions within the first ten laps after a false start briefly delayed the race beginning. Despite a drive-through penalty, Power was able to pull into contention later in the race with aggressive moves. No one, though, was faster than Castroneves. Hunter-Reay, meanwhile, had a poor ending to a rough weekend after the biggest win of his career. He started 21st in the 22-car field on Saturday and Sunday because of crashes. Hunter-Reay ended the first race by crashing on the final lap and the second one did not last as long due to an electrical problem knocking him out after 61 laps. "You name it, we had the problem this weekend," he said. "Im just glad to be getting out of here." Hunter-Reay left Detroit -- heading to New York for an appearance Monday night with David Letterman -- without the IndyCar points lead. He entered the weekend with a 40-point lead on Power and exits it in third, 27 points behind Power and eight more behind Castroneves. "Major hit," Hunter-Reay acknowledged. Honda had dominated the Detroit Grand Prix the previous two years -- in the shadow of Chevys world headquarters -- and had the fastest car last week at the Indy 500. The engine manufacture did not fare better than fifth on Sunday with James Hinchcliffe following Charlie Kimball and Scott Dixon. Pole-sitter Takuma Sato was spun twice, dropping him to 18th. ' ' '

"I was asked, do I need to talk with Donald, and I passed, quite honestly," Rivers said Monday. "I dont think right now is the time or the place, for me, at least. I just took a pass." Sterling is purported to have told a woman not to bring black people to his games or associate with them. "Yeah, I believe he said those things. But I still want to make sure," Rivers said during a conference call. "As far as believing those things? I heard what he said. Until someone tells me differently, you usually listen to what people say. I havent given him his due process. I havent given him an opportunity to explain himself and quite honestly right now I dont want him to. I want to wait for that further judgment." The coach cancelled practice Monday, a day after a 118-97 loss to the Golden State Warriors that evened their playoff series at 2-2. "I just felt like they needed to breathe. Theyve been inundated with this," Rivers said. Still, he said pretty much the entire team was at the clubs practice facility. "Ill go down and say hi to them and talk to them, make sure theyre in the right place. Right now its more than basketball. This is a non-basketball decision that I thought I had to make and I thought it was right decision. If you get your life better, then you can probably do your work better. They need to do that." Game 5 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles. "These last 48 hours or so have been really hard for our players and everyone," Rivers said. "Id just like to reiterate how disappointed I am in the comments attributed to our owner. I cant tell you how upset I am, our players are." Warriors coach Mark Jackson suggested that Clippers fans should boycott the game. "I believe iif it was me, I wouldnt come to the game," Jackson said.dddddddddddd"I believe the fans, the loudest statement that they can make as fans is to not show up to the game. ... To me, it will make the noise of it not being tolerated. That this is a different time. Its unfortunate, and we cannot allow someone with these feelings to profit." Rivers said he knew Jackson was speaking from his heart and that everyone has their opinion. "I dont share that. I hope its packed and people are cheering for us, the players. And they were cheering for the players before this happened. But if they feel differently, who can say theyre wrong? And Im not the one thats going to say that, I can tell you that." Rivers said its still to be determined whether he or a player will address the crowd. "Again, we dont know the right answer," Rivers said. "We want to do right here. We want to make the best decisions here. If we feel thats something will help our fans, then it will be done. If we feel its something they dont need, we wont do it. The tickets have already been sold. The fans, theyre in a dilemma as well. We want them to cheer for their players and their team. Because its still their players and their team, and it will be their players and their team. I think from what I get from the fans Ive heard from, thats how they feel, like, This is my team, these are my players Im cheering for, and thats not going to change. I hope that continues." Rivers said the controversy has been tough on his players. "What other players are going through Should I be playing thoughts in the middle of a playoff series? I sympathize for my players. They didnt sign on for this. Yet here they are and theyre in the middle of it and they have to deal with it. They didnt do anything wrong and theyre in the middle of it, and they didnt ask to be. I feel terrible for them. Im going to try to do whatever I can to make them OK." ' ' '
Palm Beach Gardens, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tain Lee fired a 7-under 65 on Thursday and he grabbed a 1-stroke lead after the opening round of the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament. Lee, who played the Fazio Course at PGA National, has played five Web.com Tour events over the last three years, but has made the cut in just one of those five. Play rotates over the Champion Course and the Fazio Course at PGA National for the six-round tournament. The Champion Course hosts the PGA Tours Honda Classic each spring. Kyle Scott and Rick Cochran share second place at minus-6, and they both played the Fazio Course on Thursday. Ted Purdy and Rob Oppenheim stand at minus-6. Purdy posted a 66 on the Champions Course and Oppenheim carded a 67 at the Fazio Course. Matt Fast opened with a 4-under 67 on the Champions Course. He was joined at minus-4 by Justin Peters, Dustin Bray, Seamus Power, Cory Renfrew and Jhared Hack, who all shot 68 on the Fazio Course. Lee started the day on the back nine and he tripped to a bogey at the 10th. After five pars in a row, he atoned for that mistake with a birdie on the par-3 16th. After a pair of pars, Lee put together a scorching front nine. He birdied the first, but gave that right back as he bogeyed the second. Lee ran off seven consecutive birdies from the third to close out his round and soar into the lead. I did not play well in my practice sessions early in the week and todays warm-up was horrible, admitted Lee, who won the Jack Nicklaus award as the Division III golfer of the year in 2010. Its clearly a marathon and not a sprint, as everyone keeps saying. Scott started with birdies at the first and sixth. After dropping a shot on the ninth, Scott jumped up the leaderboard with five straight birdies from the 10th. After a pair of pars, Scott moved to 7-under with a birdie on the 17th, but he closed with a bogey at the last to end one back. Cochran, who is the nephew of PGA and Champions Tour winner Russ Cochran, birdied the fourth to go with five pars in his first six holes. He faltered to a bogey on the par-3 seventh, but that was his only dropped shot of the day. The 28-year-old posted three birdies in a 4-hole span from the ninth to climb to minus-3. After he parred the 13th and 14th, Cochran also birdied three of the last four holes to gain a piece of second place. PAUL, Minn. -- Jared Spurgeon spent a month watching the Minnesota Wild from the press box. When he returned to action Tuesday night, he didnt waste any time making an impact. Spurgeon had two assists in his return from injury, Darcy Kuemper made 34 saves and the Wild defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1. One of Minnesotas top defencemen, Spurgeon was placed on injured reserve Jan. 4 after he hurt his left foot against Buffalo. While the Wild went 8-4-2 in his absence, they were eager to get him back in the lineup -- and he was eager to get back into the flow. "I think theres lots of adrenaline that helps you," Spurgeon said. "At the start I was a little nervous being off for a month, but they threw me right out there for the opening shift and that helped me really calm down and get my feet wet for that first one." Spurgeon got started early, setting up Nino Niederreiter for his fifth goal of the season 9 seconds into a power play in the first period. Early in the third, Spurgeon helped the Wild double their lead when he fed Dany Heatley in the slot for his 11th. Spurgeon ended up playing 21:12, third-most among Minnesota defencemen. "Hes taken really good care of himself while hes been out," Wild coach Mike Yeo said. "To be able to come in and play at the level that he did tonight just shows you how smart of a player he is." The Lightning pulled within a goal with just more than 6 minutes to play when Valtteri Filppula tipped in Martin St. Louis pass at the goalmouth for his 20th of the season. Tampa Bay buzzed around the net the rest of the way, but Kuemper stopped Alex Killorn and St. Louis from in close, and Tyler Johnsons shot hit the post in the final 40 seconds. Lightning coach Jon Cooper was hoping to see a little more fire out of his club at the end of a 1-3 road trip. "I dont know how much courage we had going to the net tonight, until the end," Cooper said. "Hence, its shocking wherre our goal was scored, standing right in front of the net.dddddddddddd" While the Lightning are still clinging to second place in the Atlantic Division, goalie Ben Bishop said theyll welcome a return home for two games before the Olympic break. "I dont know if you want to say were tired, but its been a long road trip," Bishop said. "We dont want to make excuses, but weve got to be better." Bishop, who finished with 24 saves, was tested often throughout the first two periods, stopping Zach Parise on a breakaway with 5 minutes to play in the first period and stoning Mikael Granlund on a point-blank backhand early in the second. Bishop was shaken up midway through the second when Parise fired a slap shot that hit the goalie in the head, but he remained in the game. Meanwhile, Kuemper made a nifty glove save to stop Johnson on a breakaway late in the second and stood tall all night in his 11th straight start, a franchise record for rookie goalies. The Wild are 6-3-2 in that span, but Yeo was impressed with how Kuemper rebounded from his last two starts, a loss at Colorado in which he was pulled and an overtime defeat at Calgary. "How do you come back to the rink the next day and be mentally tough enough to come in and perform at the level that you need to? Thats what was very impressive about him tonight," Yeo said. "I liked his game an awful lot." While the Wild got Spurgeon back, they had another setback on the blue line 2 minutes into the game when defenceman Marco Scandella got tangled up with Johnson. Scandella skated off the ice with assistance, favouring his right leg, and did not return. Yeo labeled him "doubtful" for Minnesotas pre-Olympics finale Thursday against Nashville. NOTES: Filppula returned after missing Saturdays game at Montreal with a lower-body injury. ... St. Louis assist gave him 966 points, moving him past former Canadiens great Maurice Richard into 85th place on the NHLs career list. ' ' '
