Rory McIlroy’s hopes of defending his Wells Fargo Championship title were kept alive with a monster birdie late in his third round at Quail Hollow. The world No 3 had little to cheer about during a disappointing moving Saturday, but brought a huge roar from those around the 17th green with a remarkable birdie putt.Heading to the penultimate hole two-over for the day and nine shots off the pace, McIlroys tee shot found the dancefloor but landed some 80 feet from the pin.
