Ray Emery will get the call in net for the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night when the team opens up its opening round Metropolitan Division playoff series in New York against the Rangers. Flyers coach Craig Berube announced on Wednesday that starter Steve Mason would be unavailable for the series opener. Mason incurred an upper-body injury last Saturday late in the second period in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins when he collided with Penguins forward Jayson Megna. The Flyers were hopeful that Mason would have been ready for Game 1. Emery is no stranger to the playoffs, backstopping the Ottawa Senators to a Stanley Cup appearance in 2007. The 31-year-old Emery last suited up in the postseason in 2011 as a member of the Anaheim Ducks. Thursday night will mark Emerys 50th playoff appearance. "To me its part of the mystery and part of the enjoyment in seeing whos right, whos wrong," Commissioner Adam Silver said recently. "Will these perceived great players coming into the draft really be in a position to turn around teams? So its part of the fun." But this was a season where for some teams, a job well done meant doing their jobs poorly. Silver said it will be looked at over the summer, but as the lottery turns 30, there isnt a perfect idea for how to run it. "I think for us, weve got to make sure we understand whether theres an aberration here because of the perception of a particular draft class, whether indeed there is a better way of do it," Silver said, "because of course at the same time you want to properly align incentives, but the very purpose of the draft is to help the worst teams restock."
