ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Ottawas Rachel Homan downed Winnipegs Chelsea Carey 5-1 in a tiebreaker at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling on Saturday morning to move into the womens quarter-finals. Homan scored two points in the third end, one point in the fifth, and two more in the seventh to seal the victory. Carey put up her single point in the sixth end. Homans team will play Heather Nedohin of Sherwood Park, Alta., in the quarter-finals later on Saturday. In mens action,Edmontons Kevin Martin advanced to the semifinals at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling with a 6-3 victory over Calgarys Kevin Koe on Saturday. Koe scored two points in the fifth end to make it a 3-2 game, but Martin responded with three points in the sixth to pull away with the victory. Martin scored three singles in the first three ends. Koe added another point in the seventh. In other quarter-final action, Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., scored three points in the fifth end to edge Swedens Niklas Edin 8-4. When his arm started to get sore and his velocity dropped, even he couldnt keep going. The Arizona Diamondbacks placed Arroyo on the 15-day disabled list with elbow tendinitis on Monday, ending the right-handers run of consecutive starts at 369, the second-longest active streak behind the 443 straight starts by Torontos Mark Buehrle. "Hes had other times in his career when hes been able to overcome things like this, but it wasnt in the cards this time," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said.
